End of Life Tyres (ELT) are a huge problem. There are over a billion globally and here in New Zealand about 5 million annually! Tyres have a complex makeup of rubber, various metals and synthetic petro-chemical components. They are bulky with a large cavity. If landfilled, over time they leach poisonous elements into our soil.

We at Enviro-tyres want to be part of the solution. A big part of the solution for ELT is effective and responsible collection. This is where we come in. We have one focus at Enviro-tyres. That is collection and environmentally responsible tyre disposal. Currently for collection we partner with NDL transport. They come and pickup your Tyres before carting them to Auckland for shredding. After shredding most of the waste tyres are containerised and exported to a recycling operation offshore.

FAQs

Why not recycle in New Zealand?
A tyre is a complex item to deconstruct. In the same way we don’t have the economy of scale to manufacture many products here, we also struggle to efficiently recycle and reuse here. With technological advances this may change in the future.

Why shred the tyres?
There are two reasons. One is they use up much less room for transport and the second is that this is the first step in recycling.

Why send tyres to Auckland for shredding?
We currently don’t have the volume to justify shredding in Tauranga. But we have a goal to do just that, we need about 3 times our current volumes to justify this expense. See our counter below
